Notes
- Route. All training events are held on the upper Sunshine Coast near Powell River. We have chosen fun, scenic routes that are either on the Marathon Shuffle course or similar trails.
- Distance. Distances have been chosen to help you ramp up to the 27km Marathon Shuffle. They have been measured using Strava. Note: There is often up to a 10% variance between measuring devices.
- Guides. Guides are local hikers/runners with a good knowledge of local trails who volunteer to make these events possible. Think of their role as being to greet you and start the workout with you, not necessarily to accompany you.
- Dogs. Please confirm with your guide if it’s OK to bring your dog.
- Details, discussion and signup. We use Facebook events to manage the weekly training events. Find details about the event and ask questions or leave comments. If you plan to participate, please say “Going”. If you’re not sure to come, but want to be notified of changes and discussions, say “Interested”. If you have special needs, please discuss with your guide BEFORE you show up.
- Meeting spot. To keep things simple, we’ll usually meet at a couple of spots that have plenty of parking.
- Penticton Maze. The small parking lot at the top of Penticton Street.
- Shinglemill. As you leave the highway for the Shinglemill Bistro, look to your immediate left. (Just past the stop sign and way before the restaurant.) Parking is free in this area.
- Water Treatment Plant. From Cranberry Lake, take Haslam Street to the end of the pavement. Meet in the parking lot to your right, behind the concrete water treatment building with the mural.
- Ability. We aim to accommodate a wide range of people who identify as hikers and runners. This may mean we have different pace groups, that you get dropped by the group(s) or you drop the group. Details will be discussed with those present just before we start.
- 5-minute rule. We aim to start promptly at 09:00. If the group leader knows you will be a few minutes late, they may wait a maximum of 5 minutes. If you’re later than that, you’re on your own.
- Preparation. Familiarize yourself with the proposed route. Dress for the weather. Bring whatever food and fluids you will need. Be trained for the distance. Let a friend or family member know your plans. Charge your phone and bring it in case you get lost.
- Questions? Please ask them on the Facebook page for the specific training event (above)
